The shift to high deductible health plans (HDHPs) has transformed an already complex payer reimbursement burden onto the shoulders of consumers who are unprepared to bear it. Consumers, on the one hand, need increased support to understand their bills and figure out how to pay them. On the other hand, patients with more skin in the game are becoming more demanding about the quality of the customer experience for which they are now paying a high price. These changes necessitate a new patient payments model that focuses on delivering convenience and clear communication to patients, to drive both quicker payments and more patient loyalty.
